The Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland (HERoNI) retains information on around 17,000 archaeological sites and monuments. This information is made available as the NI Sites and Monuments Record (NISMR) which is updated as new sites are discovered and existing ones explored.

    Before you start

Typical site types are ancient settlements, burials, castles and churches, and a proportion of these survive only as buried remains below ground. The NISMR database permits searches by townland, site name or type and generally provides a description, a bibliography, and an image gallery with links to scans of the paper files held by HERoNI.

The Sites and Monuments GIS layer and associated database are currently undergoing maintenance, which is causing delays in updating them with new information. HED are aware that in a small number of cases locational information may need to be corrected, but if you have any queries about an individual site, please contact Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland (HERoNI). For Scheduled Monuments, the Scheduled Zones layer is an indicative dataset, and you should request copies of the official scheduling declarations held by HERoNI if you are considering any new work that might affect these sites.
