Suspended sentence for benefit fraud at Laganside Magistrates’ Court

A woman has been convicted at Laganside Magistrates’ Court for fraudulently claiming over £14,000 in benefits.
Christine Craven (40), of Bawnmore Drive, Newtownabbey, claimed Housing Benefit totalling £14,727 whilst failing to notify a change in circumstances, namely living with a partner.
She was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment suspended for twelve months. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.
Ms Craven is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongly obtained to the Department.
Suspected benefit fraud can be reported to the Department for Communities anonymously.
