The investment will deliver a high quality public realm scheme including replacement of footpaths, repairs to the sea wall and replacement street furniture.

The Department for Communities provided £1.96million towards the scheme with Newry, Mourne and Down District Council contributing £651,000.

During the visit, Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey said:

“I am really pleased to be in Warrenpoint today to see the progress of this £2.6m investment in the Promenade. This project will enhance the appearance of the area for local residents and visitors, benefit local businesses and make the town centre more sustainable.

“My Department is committed to the development and regeneration of our towns and city centres as they play such an important role in our local economy.  This investment will deliver a more welcoming, accessible and attractive space for everyone to enjoy and I am pleased that my Department has been able to support this much need work.”

Welcoming the scheme, Chair of Newry Mourne and Down District Council, Councillor Michael Savage stated that:

“As one of the most scenic parts of our district, this Phase 1 public realm scheme along the Front Shore, represents a long-awaited significant investment for Warrenpoint.  Working in partnership with DFC, WBR Chamber and others, this scheme presents a great opportunity to further boost the overall regeneration and grow of the town.”

The public realm scheme is being managed by the Council and work is due to complete at the end of June 2023.
