The Social Security (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2021 - screening

Date published: 07 October 2021

The Social Security (Amendment) (EU Exit) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2021 make amendments to the Social Securiy (Immigration and Asylum) Consequential Amendments Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 (“the Immigration Regulations”). Amendments are required to ensure that the Immigration Regulations operate in line with the new immigration system in place from 1st January 2021 and to take account of the fact that some Association Agreements (AAs) no longer apply to the UK after its exit from the European Union (EU).

Under the new immigration system, European Economic Area (EEA) migrants arriving from 1st January 2021 are being treated in the same way as migrants from the rest of the world.
