  • Two publications released on experiences of sport/physical activity and the arts in NI

    The Department for Communities (DfC) today released the two publications, ‘Experience of sport and physical activity in Northern Ireland’ and ‘Experience of the arts in Northern Ireland’.

    The main findings of the 2015/16 sport and physical activity report include:

    • In 2015/16, more than half of all adults (53%) had participated in at least one sport within the previous year. This was similar to 2014/15 figure (55%) and generally consistent with the longer term trend.
    • Swimming / Diving, Keepfit / Aerobics / Yoga / Dance exercise (19%), Jogging (15%) and ‘Cycling for recreation’ (13%) remain the most popular sports amongst adults.

    The main findings of the 2015/16 arts report include:

    • In 2015/16, almost a third of all adults (32%) had participated in at least one arts activity within the previous year whilst almost eight in every ten had attended an arts event. Although these figures were both decreases on the 2014/15 figures (35% and 80% respectively) they were consistent with the longer term trends.
    • ‘Textile crafts such as embroidery, crocheting or knitting’ (9%), was the most popular arts activity to participate in within the previous year whilst the most popular arts event attended was a ‘Film at cinema or other venue’ (57%).

The report presents findings from the 2015/16 Continuous Household Survey which is a Northern Ireland wide household survey administered by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). Further information on the survey including sample design and response rates is included in Appendix 1 of the statistical bulletin.
