Consultation description
The Department for Communities (DfC) has responsibility for public libraries in Northern Ireland through its sponsorship of Libraries NI, the body responsible for delivering public library services across the region. This consultation is a key stage in developing a new Public Libraries Policy to set a strategic vision and direction for the public library service over the next 10 years.
Public libraries are among Northern Ireland's most valued and accessible public services. They provide welcoming community spaces where people can access information, books and resources, develop literacy and digital skills, support learning, health and wellbeing, explore local heritage, and participate in a wide range of cultural and community activities.
We are inviting views on the proposed vision, strategic priorities and a number of emerging issues facing the public library sector. These proposals have been developed through engagement with stakeholders across the public library sector and informed by research into current policy and practice across the UK and internationally.
Your views will play an essential role in shaping a new Public Libraries Policy for Northern Ireland.
We encourage respondents to submit their feedback through Citizen Space. However, if this is not possible, you may also respond by email or in writing using the postal address provided.
The Department has also published its Equality Impact Screening document and Rural Needs Impact Assessment as part of this consultation.
A privacy notice specific to this consultation has also been published.
