In 2022, DfC Historic Environment Division carried out a condition survey on listed thatch buildings in Northern Ireland. An overview of the information gathered is now available. The survey made comparisons on building condition with the thematic survey completed in 2007.

It also summarised challenges faced by buildings and their custodians in maintaining our thatch buildings, which included the following:

    • lack of thatchers to carry out work.
    • funding the work.
    • obtaining quality traditional materials.
    • losing local details.
    • insuring thatched buildings.
    • vacant buildings (39% deemed unused at time of visit).
