The Department is responsible for commissioning free, independent debt advice in NI from a Debt Levy collected from financial services. Currently the Department grant funds Advice NI to deliver free independent debt advice across Northern Ireland in collaboration with local advice partners.

Due to an error in HMT allocations to Northern Ireland and other devolved nations £781,600 has been made available in 2024/25 and another £390,800 in 2025/26, totaling £1.17m over the two years. Additionally, HMRC has committed to allocating £75,000 for 2024/25 and 2025/26, totaling £150,000 over two years. This gives a total amount of £1.32m over two years in addition to the debt levy amount. These monies are not recurrent, so the Department is unable to consider any longer-term plans.
