Local Housing Allowance (LHA) is used to calculate Housing Benefit and Universal Credit housing element awards, based on the size of a household and location of a property. LHA, which has applied to tenants in the private rented sector since it was introduced in 2008, is calculated using the thirtieth percentile of private rents for similarly sized houses in an area.

LHA rates are calculated by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) in January of each year using information collected in the year up to 30 September prior to the making of the regulations.
