The Historic Environment Division (HED) provides a range of downloadable datasets that are generally updated on a monthly basis and made available under the Open Government Licence.

These GIS datasets, along with others, can also be accessed through the Open Data NI Portal, Spatial NI, and via a web service.

To ensure access to the most current information, users are strongly encouraged to connect to our data via the web service, which can be used within a range of GIS mapping applications. It includes datasets such as the NI Sites and Monuments Record, Listed Buildings, Industrial Heritage Record, Built Heritage at Risk, Defence Heritage Record, Ship and Aircraft Wrecks, Areas of Archaeological Potential and Significant Archaeological Interest, Battlesites, Historic Parks, Gardens and Demesnes, and Scheduled Zones.

Updates to HED datasets are published monthly on all platforms, including the Historic Environment Map Viewer, and may include new sites, revised scheduled areas, adjustments to site locations, or updates to dataset attributes such as site types.

It is important to note that Scheduled Zones are provided as an indicative dataset only, and anyone considering work that could affect a scheduled monument should obtain the official scheduling declarations from HERoNI.

The Archaeological Investigations layer is not currently available through via our web service or as a standalone download due to its size, and users should instead consult the HED Map Viewer to identify previous archaeological work.

If you are aware of historical or other information which you feel is not accurate or has been misinterpreted, or if you possess extra information which might contribute to our understanding of a structure’s architectural or historical value we would be pleased to hear from you at Historic Environment Record of Northern Ireland (HERoNI).
