The Department for Communities has launched a competition to appoint a Councillor Member to the Board of Libraries Northen Ireland. The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Thursday 9 April 2026.
Libraries NI primary duty is to provide a comprehensive and efficient public library service for persons living, working or studying in Northern Ireland.
Libraries are community hubs that provide free, inclusive, shared, accessible and trusted spaces. They are embedded in communities and used by people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds. With 89% of the population living within two miles of a branch library or mobile library stop, there is tremendous potential for libraries to provide local access to, and support for, a range of citizen-focused services.
The purpose of the Libraries NI Board is to provide effective leadership and strategic direction to the organisation and to ensure that the policies and priorities set by the Minister for DfC are implemented
Individuals with the relevant experience and enthusiasm are now sought to join the Board as a Councillor Member, with the Department recognising the importance of a diverse range of individuals on the Board.
