Ulster Supported Employment Ltd (USEL) Board Appointment

Communities Minister, Gordon Lyons MLA, has announced the appointment of Mrs Michele Corkey as a USEL Board Member. This appointment is from 1 January 2025 until 31 December 2028.
USEL was established to provide supported paid employment for disabled people. Approximately 70% of employees at its manufacturing and recycling facility in Belfast have a disability or heath related condition. Today USEL is the largest supporter of people with disabilities within Northern Ireland with offices in Belfast, Londonderry, and Portadown. Each year the company supports over 1200 people with disabilities in more than 750 companies to enter and sustain employment through its various programmes. The company’s vision is “To be the lead provider in helping people with disabilities gain employment”.

1. USEL Board Members receive remuneration of £155 for each board meeting attended, plus reasonable expenses. Attendance is approximately 11 meetings per year.
2. This appointment has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland’s (CPA NI) Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, CPA NI requires the political activity of appointees to be published. - Michele Corkey
Mrs Corkey has been a teacher and leader in education for over 30 years in various school settings across Northern Ireland. She has been proactive in creating strong collaborative relationships, and has led, motivated and developed staff and teams across many organisations to deliver high levels of performance and improvements across schools in NI and in the Further Education sector. She is the current temporary Chair of Belfast Metropolitan College for which she receives remuneration of £20,000 per annum plus reasonable expenses. Mrs Corkey is also a Non-Executive director of Southern Health and Social Care trust Board for which she receives remuneration of £9,327 per annum plus reasonable expenses. She has not undertaken any political activity in the past five years
