  • Public Appointment Opportunity: Appointment of Members to the Historic Buildings Council (HBC)

    • Listed Buildings,
    • Public appointments

    Date published: 19 March 2026

The Department for Communities (DfC) has launched a competition to appoint new Members to the Historic Buildings Council. The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 13 April 2026.

Appointment of Members to the Board of the Historic Buildings Council

HBC acts as a statutory advisor to DfC. Its role includes advising the Department on the listing and delisting of buildings, listed building consent, and to keep under review, and from time-to-time report to the Department on the general state of preservation of listed buildings.

The Council supports the work of the Department to treasure the past and thereby to enrich the future. Our historic environment supports our prosperity, strengthens our society and shapes our character. The ways in which it does this are multiple and increasing, as are the challenges to it.

The Department is now seeking new Members. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who wish to use their skills and experience to make a significant contribution to the protection and development of our unique and important historic environment.

Those with the necessary commitment and drive to make a difference from any background, are encouraged to apply.

Further information on the competition, including an application pack, can be obtained at Public Appointments, by contacting the Public Appointments Unit. Section 5 of the Candidate Information Booklet provides further detail if you work in the public sector.
