New multi-purpose playing field for Aughnacloy – Givan

Date published: 25 January 2017

Communities Minister Paul Givan has announced £533,000 for a new 3G pitch for Aughnacloy College.

The project, to be funded by the Department for Communities through the Regional Shared Sporting Facilities programme, will be finalised once a budget outcome is known and will be delivered by the Education Authority and operated in partnership with Mid Ulster Council.

The pitch will be within the grounds of Aughnacloy College and will be managed by the College during school hours, with the Council managing the facility in the evening and weekends, making this state of the art facility available for wider community use.

The Minister said: “Projects such as 3G pitches provide an opportunity for people from various backgrounds and communities to come together and participate in sport and avail of healthy activities in a safe, fit for purpose modern facility.

“Sport and physical activity can be an important part of everybody’s life and has the potential to reach across our communities in so many ways, including improving the health and well being of individuals and by building cohesive communities.

“I welcome the excellent collaboration between the Education Authority, Aughnacloy College, Mid Ulster Council and the local community in delivering this project, and in coming together to manage the new facility going forward.  This type of shared use scheme not only benefits the school but it will also benefit the people who live in Aughnacloy area and the wider rural community.”
