Lyons welcomes positive impact of Open Championship

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has welcomed the positive impact that staging the Open Championship has had on Northern Ireland.
It follows a report from the R&A highlighting the significant economic and tourism benefits that were delivered by the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club.
The Minister said:
“Last summer, the north coast was thronged with visitors from across the globe to watch the spectacle of the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush. This was a momentous occasion that placed us firmly in the global spotlight, showcasing the breathtaking beauty, warm hospitality, and vibrant spirit of Northern Ireland, with Portrush as its proud host. Indeed we attracted record visitor numbers and it was the biggest Open ever staged outside of St Andrews.
“Today’s report from the R&A is hugely positive and demonstrates the economic impact and visitor numbers that sporting events such as these bring to Northern Ireland. The event also undoubtedly created a strong legacy for golf here.
“In March I helped launch the Road to the Open initiative, offering golf taster sessions at 75 primary schools, along with a six-week ‘Unleash Your Drive’ initiative at a further 20 primary schools. I fully recognise the value of sport – including golf – and the vital role it plays in encouraging people of all ages to stay active. Sport and physical activity contribute to healthier, longer lives, foster community connections, and, just as importantly, bring joy and fun. These initiatives, as well as the tournament itself, will deliver a lasting legacy that continues well into the future.”
