  • Lyons welcomes opening of Carnagat Community House Extension

    Date published: 8 July 2025

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has welcomed the official opening of a new extension to Carnagat Community House in Newry.

The Community House, which is leased to Carnagat Community Association by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE), was outdated and no longer fit for the purpose of providing space to accommodate the increase in demand from local people looking for access to community activities.

The new extension has created additional space within the building, resulting in extra facilities which will enable the community to plan more activities on a daily and weekly basis and so target greater numbers. It is hoped that this will then encourage more volunteering to support the Community Association.

The Department for Communities provided over £356,000 through its Neighbourhood Renewal Programme to support the project.

Minister Lyons said, “I am pleased that my department has been able to provide financial support for the community extension in Carnagat, and I want to recognise the close collaboration between my department, NIHE, and the Community Association.  This is a vital facility, supporting local people and services and, thanks to those partnerships, this extension will provide more space for activities, services and volunteering, supporting the local community for years to come”.

NIHE Area Manager, Claire Crainey said “We are delighted to see the completion of the extension to Carnagat Community House. This project is a testament to the value of strong partnerships between statutory bodies and local community organisations.

“By investing in this facility, we are helping to ensure that local people have access to a welcoming space where they can engage in community activities, access services, and feel supported. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this enhanced space will have on the community for many years to come.”
