Government support for listed church buildings has been welcomed by Historic Environment Division

Under this scheme, a total of 401 places of worship across the UK have received between £10,000 to £100,000 to meet the costs of urgent repairs to roofs and rainwater disposal systems. Money is also being provided for structural investigations; specialist reports and bat surveys.
Awards between £10,000 and £100,000 have been offered towards the urgent repair of roofs, gutters and drains, failure of which is the principal cause of decay in historic churches.
In total, 401 listed places of worship across the UK will benefit from awards from the £25 million funding package given by the Treasury. This follows the 501 awards announced in the first round in Spring 2015.
In Northern Ireland 25 schemes were awarded funding 2015. This year 17 schemes in Northern Ireland have been selected which include the Cathedral Church of Christ the Redeemer in Dromore, St Patrick’s RC Cathedral in Armagh, St Cedma’s Church in Larne and Killinchy Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church. In Belfast, May Street Presbyterian, Cregagh Presbyterian, Mount Merrion Parish Church and St Mary’s Church are on the list of successful applicants. In all, seven listed places of worship in Co Down, six in Co Antrim, two in Armagh and one in counties Tyrone and Fermanagh have secured funding through this scheme.
The Fund is administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) on behalf of the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS).
