Givan launches Transformation South / West Masterplan for Belfast

Date published: 06 December 2016

Communities Minister Paul Givan today launched a strategic plan for the south west area of Belfast.

The Transformation South / West Masterplan aims to provide a strategic vision for the regeneration and development of the Boucher Road and Andersonstown Road areas of south and west Belfast respectively.

The study aims to inform the future planning of the area, and proposes a series of twelve actions which could improve the environment, create new transport linkages, support business and establish an attractive location for future development and investment.

Launching the report, Minister Givan said: “The south west area of Belfast is an important economic hub within the city. Its success in terms of attracting industry, retail, leisure and employment opportunities over the years has ensured that it has become a region that sees considerable activity on a daily basis. Such success has however also brought significant challenges with its popularity as a location undoubtedly leading to increased traffic congestion and deteriorating air quality. The recent economic downturn has also had an impact, evident with a number of vacant sites and buildings.

“It was these challenges that prompted my Department to commission this study and the Masterplan identifies a number of recommendations that in the long-term will support existing business, attract new investment, connect neighbourhoods, improve the environment and promote better integration with the surrounding city.

“I would like to thank all stakeholders involved in contributing to this study, particularly the South and West Belfast Partnership Boards and Belfast City Council. Looking at the potential actions set out in the report, there is no doubt that collaboration in the future is key to long-term delivery and my Department through its regeneration remit, is committed to working in partnership with all stakeholders to underpin the sustainability of and indeed stimulate growth in the south west area of Belfast for the benefit of all who live, work, shop or relax there.”

The report is now available to view on the Department for Communities website.
