Givan attends launch of Heritage Gateway development in Enniskillen

Date published: 22 September 2016

Communities Minister, Paul Givan, today attended the opening of a prestigious new heritage development at Enniskillen Castle, County Fermanagh.

A key State Care Monument within the county, this development has been spearheaded by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council. It has been undertaken over the past 18 months with contributions from the Historic Environment Division of DfC.

Speaking about today’s official opening, Minister Givan stated: “I am absolutely delighted to see the Fermanagh Heritage Gateway open to visitors. This is a major asset for the county and for Northern Ireland, and will serve as a destination, an important resource for the local community, and as a starting point to explore and discover the rich heritage in the area. It is fitting that it sits within Enniskillen Castle, one of the key monuments in State Care in County Fermanagh.”

The project has cost £3.5million, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Sustainable Competitiveness Programme for Northern Ireland 2007-2013 administered by Tourism Northern Ireland, DfC Historic Environment Division, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and the Friends of Fermanagh County Museum.

Visitors can enjoy seven new museum galleries and a state of the art Visitor Information Centre. There are ‘behind the scenes’ rooms where visitors will be able to view restoration and remedial work undertaken by the museum curatorial staff, an area for young visitors for soft play and interactive learning. A genealogical service is also available.
