    Date published: 26 October 2016

Communities Minister, Paul Givan MLA, has announced a £220,000 funding package to assist businesses in Carrickfergus town centre.

The revitalisation scheme, which is being funded by the Department for Communities and Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, will improve the appearance of many shops and businesses in the town through the installation of new shop frontages and will be complemented with additional marketing and publicity activities.

The areas identified for this support include Upper North Street, Antrim Street, High Street, Lancastrian Street and Irish Quarter West.

Minister Givan said: “Carrickfergus has much to offer tourists, visitors and shoppers and this investment builds on the success of other schemes funded by my Department in the town, including major public realm works.

“It is vital that we continue to develop the built environment so that Carrickfergus prospers as an attractive destination for everyone to enjoy.

“I look forward to seeing the upgrades completed and am confident that their benefits will be reflected in attracting visitors and shoppers to the town coupled with increased trade for local retailers and businesses.”

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Audrey Wales MBE commented:

“This project is only the latest development in a series of initiatives, coming after a previous revitalisation programme was carried out and the successful public realm works were completed.

“The investment of £220,000, the bulk of which is coming from the Department for Communities includes £20,000 from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. This is a great investment and a huge boost for the town of Carrickfergus.

“I very much welcome this project and also look forward to the associated promotional and marketing activities which will assist the retailers in the town.”

    Notes to editors:

    1. Total cost of the project in Carrickfergus is £220,000, with Department for Communities contributing £200,000 and the balance provided by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

    2. The Carrickfergus scheme will be delivered by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.
