Communities Minister, Paul Givan has announced funding of £335,000 for the development of a new community centre in Newry.

    Minister Paul Givan

The new centre will be built on a site adjacent to Quayside Close Sports pitches at the Albert Basin. It will provide modern community facilities for the people living in the area, including much needed sports changing facilities for the adjacent playing fields. Delivery of the project will be managed by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Mr Givan said: “This community building will be a welcome new local venue and will enable the Drumalane/Quayside Close Community Association to offer a variety of programmes and activities for residents of all ages, within a safe purpose built facility.”

The Minister paid tribute to the Community Association and to Newry and Mourne District Council for their work in bringing the project to this stage of development. He said: “The project is a prime example of how partnership working between the public, private and community sectors result in beneficial outcomes for the local community.

“This clearly demonstrates my commitment to tackling disadvantage and improving the quality of life for all the residents of the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Area.”
