  • Contractor appointed for Holywood public realm

    Date published: 30 December 2016

Communities Minister, Paul Givan, has welcomed the appointment of Northstone (NI) Limited Material Division to carry out the £1million regeneration scheme in Redburn Square, Holywood.

The Northern Ireland Executive, through the Department for Communities, is investing £662,000 in the scheme with Ards and North Down Borough Council contributing up to £350,000.

The contract has been awarded to Northstone (NI) Ltd by Ards and North Down Borough Council following a tender exercise, with the work expected to start in the New Year with completion late 2017. The regeneration works will greatly enhance the Redburn Square area of the town as the main gateway into Holywood from the A2 shore road.

Minister Givan said: “This public realm scheme in Holywood will result in significant improvements to the town by extending and reinforcing the works already completed in the main commercial core. Over the past months as Communities Minister, I have been able to see the considerable benefits brought by the Executive’s investment in town and city centres. This investment in Holywood will undoubtedly help to make the town more attractive to its residents, traders, visitors and investors and this appointment means that this important work will soon be getting underway.”

It will create a much improved shared space within the town by improving the overall aesthetics and physical environment of the area, whilst being aware of the town’s designation as a Conservation Area and Area of Townscape Character.

Mayor of Ards and North Down, Alderman Deborah Girvan is delighted to continue working in partnership with the Department for Communities on this exciting gateway project and commented: “It is fantastic that the Redburn Square Public Realm Scheme has now ‘gone live’ and we look forward to work starting on-site in the New Year. The other public realm works completed in Holywood have greatly enhanced the physical appearance of the town and been welcomed by residents, traders and visitors alike. The Redburn Square Scheme will complement this, further enhancing the vibrancy and unique appeal of Holywood.”

The scheme will build upon and compliment the works recently completed in High Street, Church Road, Shore Road and Upper Hibernia Street and will deliver enhancements to Redburn Square, Lower Hibernia Street and Sullivan Place and will include upgrading of footpaths and street lighting, along with soft landscaping to the Square while creating a suitable settling for existing landmarks.
