Building Safety Co-Design
Date published:
The Department for Communities is seeking the views of those involved in the commissioning, design, construction, maintenance, and management of high-rise residential buildings (HRRBs)*.

The Department’s Residential Building Safety team is developing new policy and legislation which will improve HRRB* safety. The team’s work follows the findings of the Hackitt reports and inquiry into the Grenfell tragedy and the recommendations made by an Expert Panel on the HRRB safety system in Northern Ireland.
Derek Kennedy, Director of Residential Building Safety, said “The building safety system in Northern Ireland is highly complex and involves a great number of stakeholders across the private and public sectors. It is essential that we work closely with all those in the industry to co-design optimal solutions for the region.”
Anyone who wishes to help the Department shape new policy is encouraged to take part in an upcoming session in January 2025. There will be 2 sessions, one on Tuesday 21 January at 10am for public sector representatives and the other on Thursday 23 January 2025 at 12pm for industry representatives. Both events will be held at the Voco Hotel, Cromac Place, Belfast. You can register by emailing the Residential building safety team.
*HRRBs are buildings in Northern Ireland that have more than 4 floors and are at least 11 metres high with at least 2 residential dwellings.
