  • Appointment announcement to the Historic Monuments Council

    Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced the appointment of Mr John Anderson as a Member of the Historic Monuments Council (HMC).

    This appointment is from 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2030.

    HMC was established in 1971 with the responsibilities of the Council principally laid out in Article 22 of the Historic Monuments and Archaeological Objects (NI) Order 1995. The purpose of the Council is to advise the Department on the exercise of its powers under this Order. It is an Advisory Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Communities.

    Notes to editors:

    1. The Member position attracts no remuneration, however there is a provision for out-of-pocket expenses.
    2. This appointment has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland’s (CPA NI) Code of Practice. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, CPA NI requires the political activity of appointees to be published. Any relevant details are provided in the below biography.
    3. Mr John Anderson Biography:

    Mr Anderson is a retired engineer with a background in the racing car construction, marine and film industries. He is the current Chair of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society Architecture, Planning and Policy Committee, having been a member of the Society since 1998. In this, and previous roles, he has worked on a wide range of heritage projects, engaging with community stakeholders and policy makers, to support heritage issues particularly around industrial and military heritage matters, and listed buildings. He has also previously served on the Historic Buildings Council and the Council for Nature Conservation and the Countryside. He does not currently hold any other public appointments and has not undertaken any political activity in the past five years.
