    About Magheramore Rath

Magheramore rath is the well-preserved remains of a high-status, semi-defensive farmstead, dating from the period 500-1,000 AD. What makes this site extremely significant is the fact that it has two sets of outer banks, rather than the usual arrangement of a single bank and ditch.

This is a counterscarp rath, comprising an interior 28.6m in diameter, enclosed by a bank, ditch & outer bank. The inner bank is 5.7m wide, 1.2m high internally & 3m above the ditch, which is 2.5-3m wide & 1.4m below the outer bank. This, in turn, is 2.5m wide, with an external revetment. Beyond it is a shallow ditch 1.8m wide & 0.4m deep. There is a entrance at E 3m wide, with a causeway over the ditch. There is also a slightly elevated area in the centre of the rath 12m in diameter. There is an attached enclosure to W of the rath, the N perimeter of which has been removed.
