  • Registration threshold for charities in Northern Ireland - Rural Needs Impact Assessment

    Topics:
    • Voluntary and community,
    • Regulation of charities

    Date published: 20 May 2024

In August 2022 Former Minister Hargey rejected the recommendation of the Independent Review of Charity
Regulation that all charities in Northern Ireland should continue to be required to register with the Charity
Commission for Northern Ireland (the Commission) and provide an annual report and accounts for publication on
the Commission’s website in accordance with the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008 (the 2008 Act).

The response to the Review set out that the Department would develop policy and draft regulations for the introduction of a £20k registration threshold. The precise nature of the threshold and the resultant regulatory framework will be determined following a public consultation.
