    Date published: 24 April 2020

Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey MLA has announced that in view of the cancellation of this year’s Gaeltacht Summer Courses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Líofa Gaeltacht Bursary scheme will be rolled over into 2021.

Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey MLA has announced that in view of the cancellation of this year’s Gaeltacht Summer Courses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Líofa Gaeltacht Bursary scheme will be rolled over into 2021.

    The Minister said:

“The decision by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to cancel the Gaeltacht courses this year is an appropriate one in current circumstances. But it is nonetheless a decision which will impact upon the Irish Language Community, the Gaeltacht colleges and the local economies.

“I have therefore taken the decision to extend the 2020 Líofa Gaeltacht Bursary scheme into 2021. Successful applicants from the 2020 scheme will be given the chance to attend the summer colleges next year instead. Deposits will be paid to Irish Language colleges in the current year in order to secure available places. This will also help the colleges to meet their administrative costs. I have asked my officials to explore options for further supporting the learning of Irish through Líofa and through partnership work with Foras.”

Tar-rolladh Scéim Sparántachtaí Gaeltachta Líofa 2020 go 2021

D’fhógair an tAire Deirdre Hargey, CTR go ndéanfar scéim Sparántachtaí Gaeltachta Líófa 2020 a thar-rolladh go 2021 i bhfianaise chealú Cúrsaí Samhraidh Gaeltachta na bliana seo mar thoradh ar phaindéim COVID-19.

    Dúirt an tAire:

“Is cinneadh iomchuí i gcúinsí reatha é cinneadh na Roinne Cultúir, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta na cúrsaí Gaeltachta a chealú i mbliana. Ach mar sin féin, is cinneadh é a rachaidh i bhfeidhm ar Phobal na Gaeilge, ar choláistí na Gaeltachta agus ar na geilleagair áitiúla.

“Mar sin, tá cinneadh déanta agam scéim Sparántachtaí Gaeltachta Líofa 2020 a thar-rolladh go 2021. Tabharfar an deis d’iarratasóirí rathúla ó scéim 2020 freastal ar na coláistí samhraidh ar an bhliain seo chugainn. Íocfar taiscí le coláistí Gaeilge sa bhliain reatha d’fhonn áiteanna atá ar fáil a chinntiú. Cuideoidh sé seo leis na coláistí a gcostais riaracháin a íoc. D'iarr mé ar mo chuid oifigeach spléachadh a dhéanamh ar na féidearthachtaí atá ann chun tuilleadh tacaíochta a chur ar fáil i leith fhtoghlaim na Gaeilge trí Líofa agus trí obair chomhpháirtíochta le Foras."

    1. The Líofa Gaeltacht Bursary Scheme was launched by the Department in 2011. This year 100 successful applicants have been awarded a bursary to attend a full board summer college course in the Donegal Gaeltacht.
