The earth bank enclosing an oval, 90m by 37m, was built with a stone core and had an inside ditch, now filled in. Although the earthwork is very degraded, its dramatic position demonstrates its original value as a look out and defence. Such forts are hard to date, but holes made when repairing the tower unearthed sherds of ‘E’ ware, roughly datable to 5th century AD.
