The Provision of Free Debt Advice Services in Northern Ireland screening

Date published: 07 January 2020

This policy relates to the provision of a free debt advice service to support over-indebted people in Northern Ireland.

The Financial Guidance and Claims Bill Act 2018 transferred responsibility for the policy and commissioning of free debt advice to NI and the devolved nations on 1 January 2019.  Funding for free debt advice is raised through a HM Treasury levy of financial services.  The Department is responsible for ensuring that this debt levy funding is used to provide free debt advice.

The project’s aim is to ensure that everyone in Northern Ireland with problem debt will have access to free debt advice.
