Consultation description

The Department has published concept design proposals for the Inner Walled City Public Realm Project in Londonderry and is seeking views from interested parties on these proposals. The project proposes the delivery of a high quality public realm improvement scheme within the Historic City Conservation Area. The targeted areas are Lower Linenhall Street, Bank Place, Union Hall Place, Magazine Street, Upper Magazine Street, Society Street and Palace Street.  Works include upgrades to footways, carriageways, street lighting and street furniture.

The project intends using high quality stone paving for the footways and granite paving setts for the carriageways. A lighting strategy is being devised which will provide a consistency in character and style while sufficiently lighting the streets to meet the required safety levels. The design also proposes removal of an existing 21-bay car park on Society Street and its replacement with a public space incorporating a grassed area with street furniture.  To further emphasise the desired precedence for pedestrians it is proposed to extend an existing pedestrian zone within the scheme area.

During the consultation period the design proposals will be on display at the Tower Museum, Union Hall Place, Londonderry. A drop-in event at the Tower Museum will take place between 2 pm and 5.30 pm on Tuesday 28 June 2016. There will be an opportunity at this event to ask questions and get more information about the project. Any comments made during the consultation period will be considered by the Department when finalising its plans for the area.
