Work to commence on £862,000 improvements for Newry: Storey

Social Development, Minister Mervyn Storey MLA, has announced the appointment of contractor, Deane Public Works Limited, to get improvement works underway in Newry.

The areas to benefit from the Public Realm improvements include Upper and Lower Hill Street, Marcus Street East and West, and Margaret Street East and West.

The improvement works will include:

• upgrading of footpaths
• increased and improved lighting provision; and
• additional street furniture

Deane Public Works Limited of Fermanagh will begin pre-construction works later this month, with the scheme due for completion in the summer of 2016.

Minister Storey said: “This is a major investment for Newry and will see significant improvements to the heart of the town, making it more attractive to its residents, traders, visitors and investors.

“I have seen how Public Realm improvement schemes in other towns have created a more attractive environment, and how these have helped improve the vitality of the area. The outcome of this project will assist Newry as it strives to continue to develop as an enterprising and competitive City and I look forward to seeing the finished works next Summer.”

The total cost of the scheme is estimated at approximately £862,696 with £662,696 contributed by the Department for Social Development, and £200,000 from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Naomi Bailie welcomed the investment saying: “Newry has witnessed significant upgrades to its Public Realm in recent years and this Cathedral Corridor scheme will further assist in the regeneration of the wider Hill Street area.

“Urban Regeneration is a core theme within the Council's Economic Development Strategy and it is only by working closely with traders and their representatives can schemes such as this be delivered."
