Suspended sentence for £9,000 benefit fraud

A man was convicted at Lisburn Magistrates’ Court for claiming over £9,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.

John McDonald (26) of Thornleigh Drive, Lisburn, claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £9,633 while failing to declare employment. He was given a two-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
