Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey MLA, has welcomed the completion of a £2.5m regeneration project in Holywood town centre.

DSD Minister Mervyn Storey MLA, & Mayor of Ards & North Down BC, Ald Alan Graham, took a break from their tour of the new public realm works in Holywood to join children & teachers from Holywood Primary School during their Christmas Carol performance

The works include regeneration of pavements and kerbs and the installation of new street lighting, furniture and planting.

Welcoming the improvements to the town centre, Minister Storey said: “These significant enhancements within a conservation area will greatly benefit locals and visitors alike. The design and specification have been finished to a high standard befitting the characteristics of the town centre as well as adding to the unique identity of Holywood.”

During a tour of the Public Realm works, the Minister added: “Holywood is an excellent example of the difference Public Realm works can make to our local towns. The completion of this scheme has given new life to a busy commercial town centre to the benefit of everyone who works or shops here. Such schemes help build confidence amongst local retailers and re-energise the future prospects of our town centres.”

Mayor of Ards and North Down Borough Council, Alderman Alan Graham, commented: "The completion of this Public Realm scheme is a very positive development for the people of Holywood and the wider Borough. It has reinvigorated the commercial heart of the town for the benefit of traders, residents and visitors. We are committed to ensuring this investment is a catalyst for further regeneration and, with the comprehensive framework provided by the Holywood Town Centre Masterplan, believe we have a strong foundation upon which to attract new businesses, new homes and new leisure and cultural provision to the town.”
