Community service for benefit fraud

A man was convicted at Downpatrick Crown Court today for claiming benefits he was not entitled to.

Joseph McCartney (60) of Grange Road, Castlewellan claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance and Housing Benefit totaling £24,346 while failing to declare savings. He was given 150 hours community service. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
