Belfast man convicted for £9,000 benefit fraud

A man was convicted at Belfast Crown Court today for claiming over £9,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.

Alan Stewart (61) of Moyle Walk, Belfast claimed Employment and Support Allowance totalling £9,155 while failing to declare he had excess capital. He was given an 18 month prison sentence suspended for two years. The fraud was uncovered following an investigation by the Department for Communities.

He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department.
