    Date published: 16 January 2017

Communities Minister Paul Givan has announced extra funding for people with disabilities.

    Minister Givan

In October 2016, the Minister launched the ‘Active Living - No Limits’ Action Plan with an initial investment of £300,000 to bring about positive change to the recreational opportunities of people with disabilities. Implementation of the Action Plan will be key to increasing opportunities for those with a disability to take part in a sport or recreational activity of their choice.

The Minister said: “Those with a disability deserve the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. A more active life contributes to better social contact as well as improved physical and mental health. I want to ensure there are ‘no limits’ for anyone wishing to pursue a more active lifestyle.

“I am delighted to announce a further £300,000 of funding, to add to the £300,000 I announced when I launched the Active Living - No Limits Action Plan, to provide more essential sports equipment in every council area. This will make it possible throughout the Province for those with disabilities to become more active through sport and recreational activity.”

Kevin O’Neill, the Chief Executive Officer of Disability Sport Northern Ireland commented: “I’m delighted to see additional investment, as part of the implementation of the ‘Active Living: No Limits 2021’ Action Plan, which will have a highly positive impact on the lives of disabled people across Northern Ireland.”
