The eagerly anticipated new multi-sport Astroturf and 3G Sports facility was officially opened on 7th January.
Supporting the community
In funding this project, at Rugby Avenue, Coleraine, in partnership with Coleraine Borough Council, Sport NI and the Strategic Investment Board, the Department recognised that there was an exciting opportunity to make a major difference in the lives of people of all ages and backgrounds. This commitment has resulted in DCAL and its’ partners being able to deliver fantastic new sporting facilities, which will be able to be used, not just by the bigger clubs and organisations in the area, but by the whole community.
The Council has given an undertaking that use and access will be managed to ensure the facilities’ availability to as wide a range of schools, groups and clubs as possible including those from areas of deprivation, womens’ sport, children with special needs and other relevant groups.
The opening, which was attended by members from stakeholder groups, as well as sporting heroes including Ireland Rugby Union star Andrew Trimble and children from the local schools, proved to be a major success.
DCAL recognises that sport has a vital role to play in peoples’ lives and it is hoped that this impressive new facility will encourage participation and promote involvement from all ages and backgrounds. Through this we hope to contribute in a very practical way to the mental and physical well being of the whole community.
