£92,700 investment sees next phase in regeneration of Clondermot: Storey

Date published: 02 July 2015

Minister for Social Development, Mervyn Storey MLA, has announced funding of £92,700 to progress the regeneration of the Clondermot site in Londonderry.

The funding will support vital detailed design work needed to progress the scheme. It will also help to secure planning permission for the construction of a multi-sports facility for cross community use, which will result from the detailed design work.

When the Clondermot area is fully redeveloped, it will feature a new sports pavilion, tennis courts, cricket nets, sports pitches and community gardens.

Minister Storey said: “Our neighbourhood should be somewhere we are happy to belong and our open spaces are fundamental to this. That is why projects such as the redevelopment of the Clondermot site play such a vital part in making our neighbourhoods more attractive and more enjoyable places to live.

“This investment of £92,700 will enable completion of the detailed design work now required by Derry City and Strabane District Council to secure planning permission in readiness for construction once it has secured the necessary capital funding.”

Consultancy work will be managed by Derry City and Strabane District Council and the design team is expected to be in place by August 2015. The overall cost of the redevelopment scheme is estimated at £4.25million. Council will bid for funding to develop the site.

The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Elisha McCallion, added: “I am delighted with the funding announced today by Minister Storey as it is essential in progressing the scheme to the next stage. This site is located in a well-known interface area and the new facilities will provide a shared resource, promoting health and well being and forging links between both sides of the community.”
