Event to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD) 2023

This year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWP) will be marked with a cultural celebration showcasing the work of local artists.

The Department for Communities has partnered with the University of Atypical (UoA) to deliver a celebratory event looking at the experiences, and the work of, deaf, disabled, and neurodiverse artists from across Northern Ireland.

Due to attend, Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service Jayne Brady said:

“Across our society, one in every four people has a disability. In the NICS, we continually strive to be a diverse and inclusive employer – one which is truly reflective of the society we serve.

“It is my privilege to be representing the NICS at this event. It is a celebration of creativity, but I’m also keen to hear from those making a contribution, be it through their attendance, through their artwork or through their wider participation.”

Damien Coyle, Chief Executive Officer of UoA, will share his experiences of the University’s work in nurturing and supporting Deaf, disabled, and neurodiverse artists in both developing their art and in finding a career within the arts sector.

The event will include a panel discussion at which five people with a real understanding of the disability arts sector can share their experiences of working in Northern Ireland whilst exploring the wider themes involved in pursuing their art as a Deaf, disabled, or neurodiverse artist.

There will also be the opportunity to view artwork specially commissioned this year by the Department, in collaboration with UoA, to celebrate IDPWD. Art from the UoA collection will be on display at the event and there will be opportunities following the formal event to engage with participants and fellow attendees.

The event is taking take place at the Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, Belfast on Friday 1 December 2023 from 11.30am to 1.00pm.

This is a free event and is open to the public. Places to attend are limited and attendees must register by 3pm on 30 November at Event Brite.

The areas of the museum where the event is taking place are accessible to all and “Visitor Services” staff will be available to provide support on the day. Refreshments will be provided. The Ulster Museum has accessible toilets on site and there are limited free accessible parking spaces at the Stranmillis Road side of the building.
