Though the spot is known as Fort Hill, this enclosure is not an Early Christian period rath but a ‘tree-ring’, a domed circular area surrounded by a fairly slight circular bank in which trees were planted, made probably in the 18th century as a landscape feature for Parkanaur House to the west. Most of the old trees have been felled over the years, but there are several other hilltop tree-rings in the area which retain their trees.
