The mound, with a slightly dished summit, has traces of a bank round its edge and is surrounded by a ditch and outer bank. Though somewhat like a motte, it is likely to be a pre-Norman raised rath, dating to the first millennium AD. A mound in Big Glebe 21/2 miles (4km) north-west, now levelled, was shown by excavation to be pre-Norman.
